What is apologetics?

Apologetics is the art of making a reasonable defence or speaking in support of a position.

The word “apologia” comes from the Greek word to ‘defend’. The Bible refers to the importance of defending our faith in Peter 3:15. It states that a Christian ought to be:  ‘always be prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for the reason for the hope that is in you’.

At the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, we have a team of apologists who engage with and respond to misconceptions about the Christian belief.

How ought apologetics be practiced

Apologetics is the art of bridge building and conversation. Rooted in evangelism and early Christianity, apologists respond to people’s questions about life, faith, the world and much more. In doing so, helping them move closer to the gospel of Jesus Christ. As such apologetics ought to always be practiced with warmth and respect, as it says in Peter 3:15… “do this with gentleness and respect”.

Why is apologetics important? Can you learn Christian apologetics?

Apologetics is important because it causes us to go deeper into our understanding of our own beliefs and the beliefs of others, thereby creating stronger bridges in ourselves and the people we are talking to. The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, where I am a speaker, aims to raise up the next generation of Christian Evangelists through education.

By offering courses and educational programs, both in person and online, we aim to equip both Christians and non-Christians in the foundations of Christian belief. Our courses are designed to be warm and welcoming places, facilitated by teachers who are trained in apologetics, and are offered as foundational programs for beginners all the way to 1 year intense courses.  Explore more about our programs here.
